U/V Light (Ultra-Violet) System
Description:
The UV Light (Ultra-Violet) process is a practical
means of disinfection for a whole house treatment system. This system
will effectively destroy potentially harmful viruses and bacteria. The
U/V radiation causes a cross-linking within an organism’s
DNA that is disruptive enough to inactivate the cell.
Water Problems This System Treats:
This system is designed specifically to treat
bacteria.
How It Works:
The U/V water-disinfection system consists of one
or more ultra-violet lamps enclosed in a quartz sleeve. Ultra-violet
lamps produce electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength of 2537
angstroms. The lamps are similar to fluorescent lamps, but they contain
no phosphorescent coating on the inside of the tube to convert the
ultra-violet radiation to visible light. The quartz sleeve surrounding
each lamp protects it from the cooling action of the water, since the
lamps must maintain a certain level of heat to produce the necessary
killing intensity.
Required Media:
This system is unique in that it only requires a
special light-bulb rather than media like the majority of other water
treatment systems. The light bulb will need to be replaced
approximately once each year because it will lose strength over time
therefore reducing its effectiveness.
Home Installation Location:
If there are multiple water treatment systems
required, the U/V Light is always the last in the treatment process. It
should be installed as close to the pressure tank as possible. It is
flexible enough to be installed in the crawl space, garage, or a
utility closet within the home.
Maintenance:
McLean Engineering should visit your home annually
to replace the light-bulb and to examine the system to ensure that it
is working properly. Additionally, water properties can change over
time. We will always conduct a water test at the annual service call to
ensure that we are providing you the appropriate water treatment
system. This annual water test will not test for bacteria but it can if
our customer requests it.
