In 1955, a PhD in Chemistry from MIT recognized the growing importance of water treatment and realized the lack of progress in the field. He founded McLean Engineering to conduct and promote research in the area in 1971. Considerable efforts led to patents on two highly sophisticated systems. One designed to remove iron with no chemicals added, and the other to eliminate larger amounts of hydrogen sulfide from well water. Both systems are recognized as state of the art in water treatment today. Research in the field of water treatment resulted in the manufacture, installation, and servicing of a number of products designed to treat a variety of problems with water in the Virginia area.
